Up Close + Personal with Camel in Morocco’s Sahara Desert
This week my memory was jogged back to my time spent in the Moroccan Sahara by photographers Jose Villa and Jared Platt. The latter was one of the speakers at WPPI San Jose last week and asked who had ever shot a wedding in the desert. I had, (in Morocco) and won his collection of custom Lightroom Presets as a result. ChaCHING! I don’t usually win stuff, so I was pretty pumped. And then spent some time reminiscing about my trip into the desert and the wedding my mom and I had the pleasure of attending/shooting. Jose Villa + Rue magazine recently collaborated on a desert-styled photo shoot which I have kept going back to again and again. The soft desert light, gentle hues, and exotic overtones, all shot in film, had me digging through images I shot in the Sahara (on film) and this one posted is one of my absolute faves. Taken on a three-day camel trek, I was pretty nervous about getting too close to the gaping maw of this often-angry camel. But adrenaline and curiosity got the best of me and propelled me to within a stinky camel’s breath of his furry face. No telephoto here, just sheer fascination and the audacity to get this close.
Love. It.

Wow Jaime!
That actually made me laugh out loud, because I could picture you running right up under that camel’s nose to get an original shot.
It’s awesome.
Today a friend of mine was asking how you would even start out travelling – like how to utilize your time and money wisely. What are your tips for the newbie travellers?
PS: For having such an ugly nose, that camel actually has very pretty eyes :)

Hey Kar! Glad you loved the shot….this is seriously one of my faves from my time in the Sahara.
As far as the travel query goes…I spent some time journaling about this this past week and I’d like to feature my thoughts in a blog rather than a comment seeing as how I’m way too verbose and need the space to flex my thoughts!!! I’ll post something next week!
Hope you have a great weekend girl!
Jaimes
PS When I saw your remark about the camel’s eyes I laughed and brought my hands up to my face and did the ‘Kari eyelash’ thing…hard to describe but I think you’d remember this! This camel’s lashes ain’t got nothin’ on yours girl!
