I am a HUGE seafood fan! Growing up with my parents’ running a fishing lodge in Northern Manitoba, then moving to British Columbia and eating more fresh halibut and salmon than I could imagine, (not to mention ridiculous amounts of sushi while going to university in Vancouver) and THEN marrying a southerner with a passion for Cajun cooking has left me craving fresh fruits de mer wherever I go. Deep-fried cod wrapped in newsprint in southwestern England, spicy crawdads in New Orleans, and the ubiquitous clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl right here in San Francisco. Last fall I had the opportunity to photograph a friend and fellow photographer’s wedding in Tofino on Vancouver Island, and boy was I stoked to chow down on the latest catch! On the recommendation of a couple friends from Vancouver I hit up SOBO for lunch one afternoon and ordered the following:
Helloooo mouth-watering goodness, come to mama! I started off my lunch with broiled oysters that oozed with cheesy bliss, and followed that up with a seasonal special of ling cod served over fresh veggies and complemented by a crisy potato cake. The tangy aioli which served as a side sauce lingered on my taste buds long after I’d finished my meal, and I wished to high heaven that I was hungry all over again just so I could hit rewind and begin round two. I generally try not to eat to the point where I’m full, but I tend to lose all sense of restraint when it comes to seafood of this caliber, and in the end my fetish for fish trumped all reason. C’est la vie I suppose!
Now that I’ve got myself all starvin’ marvin, I’m relieved that I only have to wait a week before I’m back in the Deep South hopefully digging into a buttery filet of blackened anything or savouring the perfection of a Cajun crawfish étouffée. To all whom we love in the South…see y’all soon!!! (And let’s go eat seafood!!!)
Bon Appetit!
PS Any favourite delicacies from around the world that I should make an effort to try one day? Or any personal favourite recipes for seafood? Will and I both love to cook and would be happy to attempt a new fish dish!
Oh yum…it makes it worse that I’m so hungry right now!!
Those photos look so appealing it makes me wish I liked more seafood!
