Farming the English Countryside, Devon, England

English Countryside | Wellies in a Farmyard | Jaime Lauren Photography

After drinking an inordinate amount of Darjeeling liquid goodness at an English tea room yesterday, and after chatting with a friend living in Devon this morning, all I can think about is clotted cream, (better than it sounds) verdant hills full of sheep, and that pair of Hunter wellies I’ve been wishing for these past four years.  It’s been too long since I’ve been to the English countryside and I’d like nothing more than to grab some boots and tromp around a farm or through a field, working up an appetite for a Cornish pasty or a warm scone served with strawberry preserves and spreadable clotted cream.  And to see a couple of dear friends who live in the southwest of England!

Speaking of friends, these boots belong to a farming family I got to know in Devon.  I can’t remember how many generations back their farm dates, or how long it’s been in the family, but born a Manitoba prairie girl, I have a high regard for families who farm.  For me this photo embodies the family farm and the English countryside.  It’s one of my favourites!

Have a great weekend!

Jaime

Up Close + Personal with Camel in Morocco’s Sahara Desert

Camel Trek | Morocco | Jaime Lauren Photography

This week my memory was jogged back to my time spent in the Moroccan Sahara by photographers Jose Villa and Jared Platt.  The latter was one of the speakers at WPPI San Jose last week and asked who had ever shot a wedding in the desert.  I had, (in Morocco) and won his collection of custom Lightroom Presets as a result.  ChaCHING!  I don’t usually win stuff, so I was pretty pumped.  And then spent some time reminiscing about my trip into the desert and the wedding my mom and I had the pleasure of attending/shooting.  Jose Villa + Rue magazine recently collaborated on a desert-styled photo shoot which I have kept going back to again and again.  The soft desert light, gentle hues, and exotic overtones, all shot in film, had me digging through images I shot in the Sahara (on film) and this one posted is one of my absolute faves.  Taken on a three-day camel trek, I was pretty nervous about getting too close to the gaping maw of this often-angry camel.  But adrenaline and curiosity got the best of me and propelled me to within a stinky camel’s breath of his furry face.  No telephoto here, just sheer fascination and the audacity to get this close.

Love. It.

    Wow Jaime!

That actually made me laugh out loud, because I could picture you running right up under that camel’s nose to get an original shot.

    It’s awesome.

Today a friend of mine was asking how you would even start out travelling – like how to utilize your time and money wisely. What are your tips for the newbie travellers?

PS: For having such an ugly nose, that camel actually has very pretty eyes :)ReplyCancel

Hey Kar! Glad you loved the shot….this is seriously one of my faves from my time in the Sahara.

As far as the travel query goes…I spent some time journaling about this this past week and I’d like to feature my thoughts in a blog rather than a comment seeing as how I’m way too verbose and need the space to flex my thoughts!!! I’ll post something next week!

Hope you have a great weekend girl!

    Jaimes

PS When I saw your remark about the camel’s eyes I laughed and brought my hands up to my face and did the ‘Kari eyelash’ thing…hard to describe but I think you’d remember this! This camel’s lashes ain’t got nothin’ on yours girl!ReplyCancel

A rural prairie road in Dugald, Manitoba.

Dugald, Manitoba | Jaime Lauren Photography

I’m keeping it short and sweet today as yesterday was a bit of a doozy!  Friday’s Favourite today is a photo from summer of 2009 during a road trip that Will and I took from British Columbia to my childhood home of Manitoba.  It was amazing to finally take Will to the place where I spent the first 12 years of my life.  This image is of the road where my closest childhood friend Cheryl grew up.  She’s married now, with two delightful little boys, and lives only just down the road.  Cheryl and I as well as our friend Sheena swapped hanging out in all of our rural backyards which backed onto creeks, and woods, and fields.  It was pretty idillic as a kid.  And magical to come back to and remember all the fun.  It’s the type of fun I’d like my kids to have one day…just with a few more hills and mountains to climb ;-)

Sigh…I love the great outdoors!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Before I even read the caption for this photo, my first thought was that this was the road to Cheryl’s place. It’s funny how something as simple as a gravel road can so easily be recognized and bring up a thousand great memories.ReplyCancel

Crazy that this is now my life again!! Well…not quite I guess, I like being a bit further north in the Canadian Shield! Great photo:)ReplyCancel

Sheena! Good to hear from you!!! I didn’t know you hung out ;-) So many great memories from our childhood hey? Will we get a reunion in Jamaica for Brooke + Andrew’s wedding? We’d get to meet each other’s husbands! So excited not just for the opportunity to shoot another destination wedding, but to possibly see some old friends!ReplyCancel
