Both the beauty and sheer number of tourists at Ephesus truly took my breath away. So much so that both inspired me to return the morning after my first visit. I RAN from the top of the ruins down the slick and uneven ancient marble street to the famed facade of the Library so I could photograph it just as the sun rose and before the hoards of barbarians tourists descended upon her steps. Mom and Will were with me on the trip down, and Dad also joined us the afternoon before, a perfect time of day to catch sunset on the ruins and shoot details in the shade after the sun has fallen behind the hills. I hope you enjoy the loveliness of Ephesus as much as I did.
Thanks again to my mom, Anna Dyke, for the photo of Will and I at the Library at Ephesus. What an incredible place to experience. I read the New Testament book of Ephesians just before going and listened to one of our friend Heath’s sermons (Ephesians Part 1) which gives a really great historical and cultural context for what the city of Ephesus was like 2000 years ago. What a surreal sense to know that I was walking in the same place as the apostle Paul once had! And to think that we are heading to Jerusalem soon where even more history has gone down!
Hope you enjoy the images from Ephesus and are enjoying the frequent Instagram posts to Facebook. A new image for Friday’s Favourite (long overdue, I know) has just been posted there as well, so feel free to head on over if you’d like to check out one of my favourite portraits from the beginning of our trip.
Here’s one last photo (probably one of my favourites) to enjoy this weekend!
“Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not.”
Hey Jaime, Leo and I both love the pictures and the essence they capture. I just wanna jump in some of that beautiful turquoise water! Some of these Ephesus shots are definitely enlarge-and-frame worthy.
Love to both of you from both of us.
Thanks Kirsta! Glad you like them! And I too want to go back and jump in that water…it was GLORIOUS! Spectacular views and an incredible experience. Israel has been just as, if not more mind-blowing! Miss you both! Jaime

Hi, I found this page by searching for ways to photograph the library at sunrise. I researched and found the site doesn’t open until 8:30am in April but the sun comes up at 5:15am. How were you able to get to the Library for sunrise then? And do they allow tripods?
Thanks!
Hi Alex, Thanks for your question. I can’t remember what time we were there, but we were in Ephesus in early October, so that would make the sunrise time a bit later. Also, we weren’t there before dawn…we arrived at the ‘back’ entrance (not the one closest to the library) just before opening and then ran all the way to the library in order to get there before anyone else. I was able to photograph the library just prior to the sun coming up and then all the way through the sunrise, which would happen later at the library than elsewhere because there’s a hill that prevents the sun from shining on it earlier. Hope that clarifies things for you. I’m not sure about tripods thought. All the best!
