I cannot even begin to describe the incredible woman that my sister is, or the irreplaceable relationship that she and I have.  Silly yet sensitive, tough as nails but tender to boot, possessing a gentle heart and yielding a feisty spirit–what more could one ask for in a younger sister.  She is the very reason I want our newborn daughter to have a sister of her own one day.  My sister Jacqui is the only person I’ll have known my entire life should we both make it to some ripe old age all wrinkled and weather-beaten, and that knowledge alone creates an indelible bond. However, if I write any further on that score, I’m sure I’ll melt into a teary puddle, so let’s move onto something a little more celebratory!

Photographing newly married couples is one of my favourite things, and this past summer Jacqui was married, providing me with the sheer enjoyment of photographing my sister as a bride with her groom Tim.   Jacqui and I were both married overlooking the same lake (Kalamalka), which is a favourite spot for just about everyone who has ever lived in or visited the north end of the Okanagan Valley where we grew up.  The lake as a backdrop certainly never ceases to get old for me, especially seeing as how I don’t live in Vernon anymore.

Here’s a smattering of images from our session, shot just as the summer sun had finished setting behind the mountains of our beloved valley.  Neither Jacqui nor I live in British Columbia and more, but this lake, this valley, and these mountains will always draw us home and back to each other.  Sigh.  The End.

Thank you Jacqui and Tim for such a lovely shoot, and to my own husband Will for helping to carry my gear as I was 7.5 months pregnant at the time of this session and exhausted after such a fun-filled wedding weekend!

And thanks to everyone who’s been patient with me as I’ve taken a bit of a maternity leave after the birth of our little girl Lauren.  She is 12 weeks today and our greatest delight!

If I don’t blog before Christmas, may this truly be a season in which you come to know and remember the unconditional love of the Saviour, Jesus Christ who was born for us all.

Merry Christmas!

Thanks Kristen! I thought it was lavender too but wouldn’t you know it, someone corrected me and told me it was Russian Sage…I had no idea such a thing existed.ReplyCancel

I really don’t post enough.  And I don’t shoot film enough.  And I think there’s a correlation between the two.  I’ve started to wonder if I’m not posting more imagery because I want to post content that is largely film-related.  Chicken or egg, I’m not entirely sure, but I guess we’ll see over the coming months.  My goal is to shoot a roll of 35mm a week.  Probably not exactly a tough assignment with a newborn on the way, but I promise it won’t be baby shots from here to kingdom come.

So in the spirit of sharing, here are some images shot this summer up on Mt. Diablo in the East Bay…the highest peak in the area and one that was recently lit up by more than just a pretty sunset.  Last week Mt. Diablo was set alight by a raging grass fire which threatened the homes and communities of the surrounding area.  Thankfully the fire was maintained and Mt. Diablo though somewhat scorched, is likely just as beautiful as ever.

And that’s that.  Short, sweet, and something to start you week off well hopefully.

This couple is really near and dear to my heart.  Reba and I became fast friends the month after I moved to Livermore almost 4 years ago, (my first friend in town actually) and since she and Steven started dating, both Will and I have really enjoyed spending time with them both.  I’m so thrilled for this amazing duo who are ridiculously head over heels for one another, and I can’t wait to seem them tie the knot next spring!

As far as their engagement shoot goes, Reba and Steven wanted to make sure a few special touches were included: the dress Reba’s wearing in the second half of the shoot was the one she wore the night Steven proposed and the bottle of Rombauer wine is one of these oenophiles’ favourites.  Reba’s extended family has deep roots up in Napa Valley and has introduced me to a number of my own favourite wines and wineries over the years.  Rombauer is just up the road from Reba’s grandmother’s picturesque ranch in St. Helena, and this shoot really reflects this couple’s natural affinity for the countryside (though shot here in Livermore, our very own wine country).

And here are a few frames shot on 35mm film thrown in…you’ll be seeing more on film in the coming months!  These were shot with Fuji 400H and scanned by Photovision Prints up in Oregon.  They do beautiful work and I’m excited to continue collaborating with them over the next while!  It really feels good to be working with film again these days…the colours and tangibility of film is something digital just doesn’t deliver for me, and there’s also something incredibly satisfying about spending more time trusting one’s technique and focusing on the couple as opposed to checking the back of the camera!  If you like what you see from my film shots, please leave a note in the comments section.

Congratulations to Reba and Steven!  Cheers to your beautiful relationship and upcoming marriage…Will and I can’t wait to celebrate with you!
